Picking a Detailer: Aircraft vs. Automobile
We cannot emphasize enough the importance of choosing an aircraft detailer that understands the unique requirements and regulations of aviation. But does this mean going to an auto detailer is completely off the table?
In this blog, we discuss…
- How automobile and aircraft detailing differ
- Whether a car detailer can (or should) detail an aircraft
- The five marks of a quality aircraft detailer
Differences between aircraft & auto detailing
Aircraft and automobile detailers differ in three key ways:
1. Detailing standards
Higher cleaning and maintenance standards apply to the aviation industry. Aircraft detailers must comply with Federal Aviation Administration guidelines. While car detailing is often viewed as “extra” and unnecessary, aircraft detailing is essential for flight safety and efficiency, requiring specialized knowledge.
2. Cleaning products
In addition to the proper certifications, aircraft detailers must use aviation-grade, FAA-approved cleaning products. Without the right chemicals, aviators risk causing extensive damage to the aircraft’s paint.
3. Washing techniques
Aircraft can be cleaned using a few different techniques – wet wash, dry wash, and polishing. A wet wash uses high-pressure water and aviation-grade cleaning products to remove heavy dirt and grime on larger planes. Meanwhile, a dry wash only using the cleaning products (no water) and some good ole’ elbow grease. Then, polishing is just like it sounds: restoring an aircraft to its original shine.
Is it safe to get an aircraft detailed by a car detailer?
The short answer: no.
The FAA encourages aircraft owners to be extra careful when choosing a detailer (and avoid using auto detailing companies) to clean and maintain their aircraft. The agency reasons that car detailers cannot guarantee 100% compliance with essential maintenance-related procedures that must be part of the cleaning process.

How to choose an aircraft detailer
There are five key qualities you should look for in an aircraft detailer:
-
Specialization – They should be experts in all things aircraft maintenance and cleaning and have a working knowledge of the relevant FAA standards.
-
Comprehensive list of services – For the best results, look for a company that offers more than just the basic interior and exterior services – things like Brightwork polishing, glass treatment, corrosion protection, and paint restoration.
-
Experience – You’ll want to hire a detailer who has some good experience under their belt. And not just any experience…but experience that has given them a strong reputation.
-
Attention to detail – Your detailer should NEVER skimp. When they’re done, every nook and cranny should be clean and well-protected.
-
Passion – This may seem like it doesn’t matter all that much. But only an aircraft detailer who deeply cares about their work will prioritize quality as much as you and your aircraft deserve.
